DETAILED ITINERARY

DAY 1: HANOI – LAO CAI (MEALS: NOT INCLUDED)

In the evening, transfer to Hanoi Railway Station for the overnight train to Lao Cai, the gateway to Sapa and the mountainous northwest of Vietnam.

Overnight on the train in a soft sleeper compartment.

DAY 2: LAO CAI – SAPA (MEALS: BREAKFAST, LUNCH)

The train arrives early in the morning at Lao Cai Railway Station, at around 5:00 AM. Upon arrival, guests may freshen up with a quick shower at a simple but clean guesthouse before enjoying breakfast at a local restaurant.

After breakfast, continue to one of the region’s colorful ethnic markets, depending on the day of travel: Can Cau Market (Saturday only), Bac Ha Market (Sunday only), Cao Son Market (Wednesday only), Muong Hum Market (Sunday only), Coc Ly Market (Tuesday only), Muong Khuong Market (Sunday only), or Lung Khau Nhin Market (Thursday only).

These markets are lively gathering places for the highland communities of northern Vietnam. People come down from the surrounding mountains to trade produce, livestock, textiles and daily goods. For many, market day is not only an economic activity but also an important social occasion to meet relatives, friends and neighboring communities. With vibrant traditional costumes, the scent of local herbs and spices, lively food stalls and the unique atmosphere of the uplands, a market visit offers a memorable insight into local life.

After the market visit, continue to Sapa Town and check in at your hotel.

Spend the rest of the afternoon and evening at leisure, exploring Sapa Town independently.

Overnight in Sapa.

DAY 3: SAPA – BAN KHOANG – TA GIANG PHINH – SAPA (MEALS: BREAKFAST, LUNCH)

Today is devoted to a beautiful walk through one of the quieter and less-visited valleys around Sapa.

Leaving the busier side of Sapa behind, the journey heads north along National Road 4C toward O Quy Ho, with several scenic stops for magnificent views of Fansipan, Sin Chai Valley, and the flower and vegetable farms of the highlands.

The road then turns into a narrower mountain route passing waterfalls, dense forest, and rugged slopes before reaching Ban Khoang, a Red Dao village known for preserving its traditional way of life. The village appears prosperous thanks to the combination of terraced wet-rice farming and cardamom cultivation beneath the forest canopy. Spend time walking through the village and learning more about local daily life.

Continue by road for approximately 10 km to Ta Giang Phinh Valley, home to the Black Hmong communities living in small villages scattered along a peaceful stream.

Lunch is served beside the stream.

In the afternoon, enjoy a village walk along local paths connecting one settlement to another. Along the way, guests may observe daily agricultural life, from ploughing and fieldwork to traditional house repair and textile making. Men often gather to build or repair homes, while women remain active in making traditional clothing.

The walk ends in the mid-afternoon, followed by the road transfer back to Sapa.

Approximate duration: 2 hours driving / 4 hours walking / 1 hour lunch

Overnight in Sapa.

Ta Giang Phinh

DAY 4: SA SENG – SAU CHUA –  HANOI (MEALS: BREAKFAST)

The final day offers a quieter and less-visited perspective on the Sapa region.

Located on the southeastern side of Ham Rong Mountain and close to Sapa Town, the Sa Seng and Sau Chua valleys remain largely untouched by mainstream tourism. Inhabited by the Black Hmong community, this peaceful valley offers a very different atmosphere from more frequently visited areas such as Ta Phin or Muong Hoa.

The trip begins from Sapa at around 8:30 AM with a short road transfer heading uphill toward the Den Thang mountain area. Along the way, enjoy several scenic stops with beautiful views over the Hoang Lien mountain range and Muong Hoa Valley before reaching a small Black Hmong hamlet set at approximately 1,572 metres above sea level.

Leaving the vehicle behind, continue on an easy walk to explore this charming settlement, where traces of the Hmong community’s former shifting lifestyle can still be seen. The trail then follows a broad village path gradually downhill through the stunning Sa Seng Valley, passing several small hamlets of Sa Seng and Sau Chua villages.

These villages retain the characteristic layout of traditional Hmong settlements, with wooden-roofed houses enclosed by stone walls, domestic animals roaming freely and children playing with handmade toys. Along the way, guests may also observe Hmong women working with hemp fibre, spinning, weaving and making traditional clothing.

The walk ends near another Hmong hamlet located close to the former site of Sapa’s traditional market.

Approximate duration: 40 minutes driving / 2 hours walking

Return to the hotel to check out by 12 noon, and then enjoy some time at leisure for lunch and last-minute exploration of Sapa Town.

In the mid-afternoon, transfer to Topas Ecolodge or Sapa Town to join the Topas Limousine bus to Hanoi. Departure is between 13:45 and 14:30, with arrival in Hanoi at approximately 20:00.

Upon arrival in Hanoi, guests make their own onward transfer arrangements to their selected accommodation.
