DETAILED ITINERARY

DAY 1: HANOI – LAO CAI (MEALS: NOT INCLUDED)

In the evening, transfer to Hanoi Railway Station for the overnight train to Lao Cai, the gateway to Sapa and the mountainous northwest of Vietnam.

Overnight on the train in a soft sleeper compartment.

DAY 2: LAO CAI – SAPA (MEALS: BREAKFAST, LUNCH)

The train arrives early in the morning at Lao Cai Railway Station, at around 5:00 AM. Upon arrival, guests may freshen up with a quick shower at a simple but clean guesthouse before enjoying breakfast at a local restaurant.

After breakfast, continue to one of the region’s colorful ethnic markets, depending on the day of travel: Can Cau Market (Saturday only), Bac Ha Market (Sunday only), Cao Son Market (Wednesday only), Muong Hum Market (Sunday only), Coc Ly Market (Tuesday only), Muong Khuong Market (Sunday only), or Lung Khau Nhin Market (Thursday only).

These markets are lively gathering places for the highland communities of northern Vietnam. People come down from the surrounding mountains to trade produce, livestock, textiles and daily goods. For many, market day is not only an economic activity but also an important social occasion to meet relatives, friends and neighboring communities. With vibrant traditional costumes, the scent of local herbs and spices, lively food stalls and the unique atmosphere of the uplands, a market visit offers a memorable insight into local life.

After the market visit, continue to Sapa Town and check in at your hotel.

Spend the rest of the afternoon and evening at leisure, exploring Sapa Town independently.

DAY 3: SAPA – LAO CHAI – TA VAN – SAPA (MEALS: BREAKFAST, LUNCH)

Today is devoted to a beautiful hike through the breathtaking scenery of Sapa Valley.

The journey begins with a road transfer along the Cau May route before descending into the Muong Hoa Valley. Along the way, admire the terraced rice fields often wrapped in soft morning mist, creating one of the region’s most iconic landscapes.

Follow a small trail across the Muong Hoa River and continue through well-tended rice terraces toward Lao Chai, a village of the Black Hmong people. From here, the walk continues through the valley to Ta Van Village, home to the Giay community.

As the trek continues along the Muong Hoa River, cross a small suspension bridge and discover a fascinating collection of ancient rock carvings. These engravings depict human figures, stilt houses and decorative patterns, offering a glimpse into the cultural history of the valley.

Lunch is served at a local home in the village.

In the afternoon, continue walking through a bamboo forest to Giang Ta Chai, a Red Dao village set in a beautiful natural landscape. After a short rest near a waterfall, begin the uphill section to the main road, where the vehicle is waiting for the return transfer to Sapa.

DAY 4: SAPA – SU PAN – THANH PHU – MY SON – NAM SAI – NAM CANG – SAPA (MEALS: BREAKFAST, LUNCH)

This day explores the southeastern valleys of Sapa, where magnificent mountain scenery and rich ethnic culture come together in a more remote and less-visited part of the region.

Leave Sapa at around 8:30 AM by vehicle, traveling southward along a narrow mountain road. The first section offers spectacular views of the Hoang Lien mountain range, Fansipan Peak and the terraced rice fields of Muong Hoa Valley. Enjoy several scenic photo stops before taking a short walk around Hoa Su Pan, a small Black Hmong hamlet, where guests may observe daily life and visit local homes.

Continue by road to Muong Bo Valley in Thanh Phu Commune. From here, enjoy another walk along a large village path, visiting several Tay homes built on stilts and experiencing the hospitality and rhythm of village life. Lunch is served at a local home, or outdoors depending on weather conditions.

After lunch, take a short drive along a rocky road to My Son Village and spend time discovering the culture and customs of the Xa Pho people, one of the lesser-known ethnic communities of the region.

The journey then continues for approximately 10 km to Nam Cang Commune to visit Nam Than Village, a prosperous Red Dao settlement. This section of the road also offers beautiful views across the Nam Sai Valley.

Return to Sapa in the mid-afternoon by road.

DAY 5: SA SENG – SAU CHUA – LAO CAI – HANOI (MEALS: BREAKFAST)

The final day offers a quieter and less-visited perspective on the Sapa region.

Located on the southeastern side of Ham Rong Mountain and close to Sapa Town, the Sa Seng and Sau Chua valleys remain largely untouched by mainstream tourism. Inhabited by the Black Hmong community, this peaceful valley offers a very different atmosphere from more frequently visited areas such as Ta Phin or Muong Hoa.

The trip begins from Sapa at around 8:30 AM with a short road transfer heading uphill toward the Den Thang mountain area. Along the way, enjoy several scenic stops with beautiful views over the Hoang Lien mountain range and Muong Hoa Valley before reaching a small Black Hmong hamlet set at approximately 1,572 metres above sea level.

Leaving the vehicle behind, continue on an easy walk to explore this charming settlement, where traces of the Hmong community’s former shifting lifestyle can still be seen. The trail then follows a broad village path gradually downhill through the stunning Sa Seng Valley, passing several small hamlets of Sa Seng and Sau Chua villages.

These villages retain the characteristic layout of traditional Hmong settlements, with wooden-roofed houses enclosed by stone walls, domestic animals roaming freely and children playing with handmade toys. Along the way, guests may also observe Hmong women working with hemp fibre, spinning, weaving and making traditional clothing.

The walk ends near another Hmong hamlet located close to the former site of Sapa’s traditional market.

Approximate duration: 40 minutes driving / 2 hours walking

After the walk, return to Sapa and enjoy time at leisure before transferring by road to Lao Cai Railway Station for the overnight train back to Hanoi. Guests may freshen up at a local hotel before departure.

Overnight on the train in a soft sleeper compartment.

Optional upgrade:
Guests may return to Hanoi by overnight train as included in the standard program. Alternatively, a private vehicle transfer back to Hanoi can be arranged as an optional upgrade for greater comfort and flexibility.
