HCMC to Cai Be (100km): 2 hours
Cai Be - Can Tho (180km): 4 hours
Leave behind Saigon’s hum of scooters and glass towers and drive two hours south to the lush green world of the Mekong Delta.
In Cai Be, step aboard a local boat that glides across tranquil waters, where palm leaves rustle and fishermen mend their nets.
Cross to Tan Phong Island, hop on a bicycle, and meander through narrow village paths shaded by fruit trees.
Stop to meet local families: watch how they craft rice paper, coconut hammocks, and thatched roofs all by hand, all from nature.
Savor a home style Mekong lunch in an ancient wooden house, surrounded by orchids and birdsong.
In the afternoon, float past stilt homes and riverside workshops, tasting fresh tropical fruits as the sun dances on the water.
Later, drive to Can Tho, the region’s lively heart, known for its evening promenade and riverfront charm.
Overnight in Can Tho.
DAY 2: CAN THO – CAI RANG FLOATING MARKET - CHAU DOC [B]
Can Tho to Chau Doc (120 Km): 2.5 hours
Rise early, this is when the Mekong truly wakes.
At dawn, board a small boat to visit the Cai Rang Floating Market, one of Vietnam’s last remaining wholesale markets on water.
Here, dozens of boats heavy with pineapples, mangoes, and melons form floating aisles, while smaller boats glide between them selling breakfast noodles and coffee.
It’s chaos and harmony all at once a marketplace like no other.
After the visit, travel onward to Chau Doc, a riverside town near the Cambodian border.
The afternoon is free to rest or explore the town’s peaceful promenade lined with colorful boats.
Overnight in Chau Doc.
DAY 3: CHAU DOC [B]
Wake to the slow rhythm of life by the river.
Visit Chau Doc Market, where traders from Vietnam, Cambodia, and the Cham minority converge at the confluence of three rivers.
Then take a small boat across to Chau Giang, home to the Cham Muslim community.
Visit a modest mosque, observe silk weaving by hand, and listen to stories of how trade winds and faith shaped the Mekong centuries ago.
Continue to a Khmer pagoda shimmering with colors and then to floating fish farms, ingenious houses that double as aquaculture systems feeding much of Vietnam.
By late afternoon, journey to Sam Mountain, a spiritual landmark dotted with pagodas and temples.
Climb or drive to the summit for a breathtaking panorama, the Mekong Delta unfurling beneath a soft amber sky, stretching into Cambodia.
Overnight in Chau Doc.
DAY 4: CHAU DOC – HO CHI MINH [B]
After a quiet breakfast overlooking the river, enjoy a few hours of leisure, a short walk, a coffee by the docks, or a final market visit.
Then depart for the 7-hour scenic drive back to Ho Chi Minh City, arriving by late afternoon.
As the riverbanks fade in the rearview mirror, you’ll carry with you more than photographs, you’ll bring back the stillness, generosity, and simple grace of life along the Mekong.
